PFR 02: SWAC’s Harold Mitchell shares his thoughts on officiating at the NCAA and NFL levels



Harold Mitchell was a Big 10 Back Judge for many years until his job relocated him to Florida. That presented an opportunity for Harold to officiate in the SEC where he later became the first African-American referee in SEC history.

Now the Coordinator of Football Officiating for the SWAC, Harold is intimately involved in the recruitment and development of of officials in one of the most competitive Division I conferences. Listen as Harold shares his insights on what it takes to make it at the highest levels of football officiating.

  1. Harold was a great referee but he was an even better baseball coach. Our Connie Mack baseball team he coached was under funded and sometimes undermanned yet he managed to inspire us to play beyond our talent level. We beat some big time opponents and won a ton of games.More importantly,most of the guys on those teams have grown into productive members of society.

    Very cool information indeed. I was only able to chat with Harold for about an hour so we didn’t get into much of his career other than football.
